Thursday, Jun 11 2009Pakistan Awarded $23M Grant From Global Fund for Malaria ControlThe Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria recen stanley cup tly approved a $23 million, five-year grant to help control malaria in Pakistan, the International News reports. The grant will fund a program aimed at reducing the number of malaria cases by 50% in 19 malaria-endemic districts along the country s western border, Faisal Mansoor, director of the Directorate of Malaria Control, said. He added that the grant will be spent on the poorest of the poor areas in terms of infrastructure, security and health facilities. According to Faisal, control efforts will target pregnant women and children younger than age five.Faisal said that the country plans to distribute about 500,000 rapid diagnostic kits to health facilities and expand malaria diagnostic services to malaria-endemic areas. He said that health workers will be trained to diagnose malaria early, adding that about 500,000 artemisinin-based combination therapies will be distributed to 165 health facilities in target districts. As part of malaria prevention efforts, the program plans to distribute one million long-lasting insecticide-treated nets in target distri stanley germany cts, the News reports.
